CASTELLAMMARE DEL GOLFO
A WALK FROM SCOPELLO TO CASTELLAMMARE DEL GOLFO
Treasures of sea and history, among castles, legends and fishermen’s lives
Castellammare del Golfo is a mere 22-minute (11km) drive from Hotel Torre Bennistra, offering a charming array of attractions to discover, from strolling along the marina to visiting the castle, home to some of the finest restaurants in the area. It's recommended to savor the local sweets as you admire the quaint old town.
Castellammare is a quaint fishing village and coastal town in the province of Trapani, nestled on the slopes of Mount Inici and encased in a gulf flanked by Capo San Vito to the west and Capo Rama to the east. Its fame is partly due to a historical event tinged with legend that took place on July 13, 1718. Legend has it that a Spanish ship seeking refuge from pursuing English vessels anchored near the Gulf of Castellammare. As the British prepared for an assault, realizing the locals supported the Spanish, the Madonna del Soccorso, summoned by Castellammare's residents, appeared and caused the English to retreat.

FORTRESSES, CASTLES, MUSEUMS
The Arab-Norman Castle, Palazzo Crociferi, and the quaint Sea Museum
The Sea Castle, also known as the Arab-Norman Castle, is a must-visit gem. Constructed in the 10th century by the Arabs, it was later expanded and updated by the Normans and the Swabians with defensive walls, towers, and a stone bridge replacing the old drawbridge.
Palazzo Crociferi, established in 1659 by Princess Francesca Balsamo di Roccafiorita as a convent for the Crociferi Fathers, stands as one of Castellammare del Golfo's most significant and well-preserved civil structures. Currently, it serves as the Town Hall, with the former cloister hosting open-air theater and cinema events.
For a fascinating glimpse into local heritage, the small Museo del Mare in Castellammare del Golfo is highly recommended. This small museum showcases images and artifacts from the fishing trade, narrating the story of the village's ancient profession. Uniquely situated in a former fisherman's dwelling, it offers a window into the authentic lives of sea workers.
