SEGESTA and SELINUNTE
THE DORIC TEMPLE AND THE ANCIENT GREEK THEATER
Segesta
The Segesta Archaeological Park is situated in the municipality of Calatafimi Segesta, within the Trapani province.
Segesta, a significant city established by the Elimi—an ancient population of western Sicily with obscure origins—is perched on Mount Barbaro at an altitude of 400 meters. It is home to a well-preserved Doric temple and an ancient theater hewn into the rock, both offering spectacular views.
The temple, often referred to as the "Great Temple," was erected in the final three decades of the 5th century BC, atop a hill west of the city, beyond its fortifications. It diverges from the conventional Greek theater design as its cavea, measuring 63 meters in diameter, is not laid directly upon the rock but is instead constructed atop specially engineered retaining walls.
Segesta, beyond its status as an artistic and monumental attraction, annually hosts a sophisticated theatrical season within its archaeological park. The events celebrate the wisdom of ancient cultures while maintaining a modern perspective. The extensive and diverse program features music, dance, and theater performances by internationally acclaimed artists. The park offers uniquely enchanting dawn concerts, providing an opportunity to experience the magic of the ancient ruins in an extraordinary manner.
