La Tonnara di Scopello is a unique place, now a true legend between sky and sea, and is just 16 minutes walk (1 km) from Hotel Torre Bennistra.
Nestled between cliffs and prickly pears, the Tonnara stands in front of the Faraglioni of Scopello, and tells the story of tuna fishing, an activity that is part of the Sicilian tradition, fundamental to the economy of the island.

La Tonnara dates back to 1200 and is one of the oldest in Sicily. Its activity continued until 1984. In ancient times, the Tonnara was smaller: it consisted of the building perched on the cliff and the nearby tower that protected the village from enemy attacks. Over time, it has been expanded by building warehouses for tools, kitchens, fishermen’s accommodation, salt storage (necessary for the conservation of fish), carpentry, the loggia for processing tuna.

La Tonnara di Scopello is also a museum: you can admire this beautiful building, observing the entrance hall, the ancient anchors, as well as enjoying the suggestive view that it offers. During the tour, the guides will accompany you through the history of the place and the practice of tuna fishing, allowing you to explore the warehouses and discover the ancient tools used.
La Tonnara di Scopello is a coveted location to celebrate private events, especially weddings, and has also been set in some scenes of the movie Ocean’s Twelve, attracting the attention of thousands of tourists from all over the world.
